Baseball-Telecoms firm KT gets green light for 10th Korean team
SEOUL, Jan 17 (Reuters) – South Korean telecoms firm KT has won the right to own the country’s 10th professional baseball team and will join the top flight KBO in 2015, the company announced on Thursday. Former state-owned monopoly KT was given the stamp of approval at a Korean Baseball Organisation (KBO) general meeting, where owners of the league’s other nine teams gave it the edge over conglomerate Booyoung Group. The new team will have its home base in Suwon, south of Seoul, and play in the second tier in 2014 before becoming the top flight’s 10th professional ballclub a year later. …

Jan 17 (Reuters) – Veteran Boston Red Sox pitcher Vicente Padilla has signed a one-year deal with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of the Japan Pacific League, according to a report on the MLB.com. Padilla’s deal with the Hawks, who last won the Pacific League in 2011 and finished third last season, is worth $3.25 million, the report said quoting sources. The 35-year-old Nicaraguan compiled a 4-1 record with a 4.50 earned run average and one save over 56 relief appearances last season for the Boston Red Sox. …
